5 Ways To Know If Your Content Sucks
#1. Comments are non-existent – If your posts get over 100 views and not ONE stinking comment, you’re in trouble. It’s important, however, to know that you won’t hit it out of the park with every post. Some may flop, and others will get lots of attention. But if every post is not getting the engagement you want – there’s something you need to work on.
Comments are great. Even after over 2,700 comments on this blog since April (including my own replies) I still get excited about getting them. They’re like validation that what you’re saying is true and that it makes sense. Not everyone will agree with you, but those comments are also great because it shows that someone actually cares about what you’re talking about.
#2. You know nothing about your readers – There’s a good chance that the engagement will be low on your blog if you can’t describe your readers’ problems, frustrations, goals, and desires. This information doesn’t just fall on your lap. You need to actively go out there and get it.
Knowing exactly who you’re talking to is the first step to creating killer content. If you’re not creating stuff that appeals to your target audience, you will NEVER HAVE an audience. Keep that in mind.
#3. You care more about the “Other R” - There are two R’s in a blogger’s world. Readers & Rankings. In order to create content that doesn’t suck, you need to care about the former. Your readers are the ones who are going to spread the word about you and your message.
Yes, the search engines will bring you traffic. And yes, it’s important to optimize your blog and your posts, but what’s a blog without a community of loyal readers and fans? I think it’s clear which R we should care about the most.
#4. You’re saving the good stuff for your paid product – It’s OK to admit it. We all do it. (or did it, in my case) It’s hard in the beginning to spend so much time creating a great post, with your most valuable tips, tricks, and strategies and just giving it away for FREE!
The thought of those ideas, concepts, and strategies one day being inside an ebook, membership site, or video course blinds us, and we don’t see the full picture. The best advice I received on this topic was that your best ideas are the ones that are going to get you noticed. When you start giving away your best stuff, you’ll begin to get all the traffic, links, and leads you to want.
#5. Your posts lack consistency - Lastly, you know your content needs help when you’re constantly jumping from one topic to the next. Posts that have no relation to the other pieces of content are not received well; especially if they have nothing to do with your main blog topic.
Many people have a hard time creating content that relates to the needs and wants of their target market (their audience). So, I think it’s time I tell you how to fix these things.
4 Ways To Fix Stinky Content
#1. Find Your Sub-niche – You need to really hone down as to what problem you’re going to be solving and for whom. For example, it’s not enough to say, “I’ll help you market yourself online” – that’s why I say, “I’ll help you blog your way to more traffic, more leads, and a bigger business”.
Even though I do help people market themselves online, I drill down a bit further and focus on just one certain group of people; people who want to use a blog as their main marketing vehicle, people who want more traffic, and people who want more lead for their business. Specificity is key. Don’t just find your niche, take it a step further and provide the best possible content to those people.
#2. Study Copywriting – Possibly the most important skill you can ever learn as an internet entrepreneur. Copywriting allows you to connect with your audience in ways that evoke trust and credibility, which leads to an increase in engagement.
The thing about writing good copy is that it’s 100% focused on them, NOT on you. When you write, I suggest reading your posts out loud to see if your overall message speaks to their wants and needs. Does it give your readers something they could use RIGHT NOW? If it does, keep it; if it doesn’t, scrap it.
#3. Style Your Posts - Maybe your content doesn’t stink, maybe it’s just the way you style it. Making your posts more appealing to the eye is a great way to get more people to read what you have to say. Huge paragraphs that don’t seem to end not only look ugly but also scare your readers away.
Take a look at how I structured this post. If you’ve read this far, you’ve read over 916 words; but I’m sure it doesn’t feel like it.
Use bullet points, bold words, italics, and numbers to break up your content into bite-size chunks. The easier you make it for your readers to read your stuff, the more likely they are to read it.
#4. Switch It Up (Add Multimedia) - Nothing says great quality like good ol’ multimedia. If you really want to take your engagement to the next level and get people to comment on every post and get people to share your stuff – you need to switch it up.
Next time you publish a big post, think about reading that post out loud, recording it, and posting the mp3 file for download. Or if you create a video for your next blog post, think about adding a PDF worksheet or workbook. Anything that you can do to increase the quality and value of your content will make people interact with your content a lot more often.
